Like his mentor, Nigel Gresley, Bulleid was a technically arrogant CME, an advocate for locomotives being driven hard and to brisk schedules and this materialised in his design ideas.

In 1934, Bullied had been opposed to the use of streamlining but for the Merchant Navy's 'air-smoothed' design is suited his purposes, being easy to clean mechanically and hiding the boiler's external pipes, which in turn meant that they could be run for function, rather than aesthetics. Opting for a welded steel firebox, instead of traditional copper construction for reduced weight and pressure benefits, Bulleid was able to make the three equally sized cylinders smaller, at 18', and better balanced.

New X-ray inspection techniques were specifically developed to monitor wear to the welded areas, whilst the newly designed Bulleid Firth Brown 6" 2' driving wheels reduced the amount of hammer blow to the rails, also resulting in less wear. Of all the new features Bulleid incorporated into the design, perhaps the most ingenious and, ultimately, most controversial was his decision to totally enclose the valve motion in an oil bath to prevent attritional wear through grit ingress.

Despite the onset of war in 1939, Bullied's design was accepted by the wartime Railway Executive Committee and production commenced though November 1940 at Eastleigh Works. The first member of the class, Channel Packet, was introduced in June of 1941 as the rather complicatedly numbered 21C1. Only 20 locomotives would be built under the SR, with a further 10 being built by BR entering straight into their service between 1948 and 1949. The last of the locomotives would be withdrawn towards the end of steam on BR in July of 1967.

Locomotive 35012 entered service with the Southern Railway in January 1945 with the palindromic locomotive 'number' 21C12. These aerodynamic power cars were constructed by British Railways Engineering Ltd at their Crewe Works and emerged in June and August 1972, fitted with Paxman Valenta 12RP200L engines, developing 2,250 hp.

The power cars, having initially been numbered 41001 and 41002, were later given the coaching stock numbers 43000 and 43001 for operating trials on the Eastern Region and subsequent transfer to the Western Region. Following evaluation and a change of name to High Speed Train, British Rail placed orders for similar trains for use on the Western, Eastern, Scottish and London Midland Regions.

When originally built at BREL's Crewe Works, the InterCity 125 units were considered to be diesel multiple units and allocated as Class 253 to the Western Region and Class 254 for the Eastern Region. With the introduction of Trailer Guard Second (TGS) carriages, later power cars had no guard's equipment installed and by 1987 most power cars were simply classified as Driving Motor (DM), although they still had luggage van space, retaining a window by the luggage door on each side.

Following problems with the power cars and the operational ease of removing power cars to perform scheduled maintenance, unit formations were abandoned, resulting in the Class 43 locomotive prefix being adopted. The 197 Class 43 power cars produced between 1976 and 1982 were numbered 43002 to 43198 and are officially the fastest diesel units in the world. The units have an absolute maximum speed of 148mph (238kph), which is the current world diesel traction record, set on November 1, 1987.

In 1987, for trial purposes, eight of the Class 43s were converted for use as Driving Vehicles with the Class 89 and Class 91 locomotives. The power cars were fitted with buffers and Time Division Multiplex (TDM) equipment that allowed them to directly control the other locomotive. Following the delivery of British Rail's Mk 4 coaching stock, the TDM equipment was removed and the power cars reverted to their normal duties, retaining their buffers.

During the late 1990s, twenty-five of the Class 43s were updated with Paxman 12VP185L engines in an attempt to reduce fuel consumption and emissions; however these proved to be less reliable in service than was hoped.

Unit number 43238 was built in February 1977 and would go on to serve BR high speed services in both the BR blue and grey livery as well as the InterCity executive guise. This colour led to the unit being nicknamed the 'Flying Tomato'.

Unit 43305 entered service in the winter of 1978 with BR initially in the blue and grey livery before transitioning to the InterCity livery in line with the rest of the class as BR high speed services forged an identity of its own. By the late 2010's the locomotive was in service with LNER painted in their standard livery. After transitioning to East Midlands Railway with much of the LNER fleet the locomotive is currently in storage.

Upgraded for 2023, the Hornby Class 43 pack includes lights front and rear and well as motorised fans in the roof and a kinomatic coupling system. Its streamlined casing was a classic symbol of the attitude towards speed and design in the 1930s when the railways saw increased competition from road and air travel. The LNER Board knew that they had to make travel between the major cities faster, more comfortable and more reliable.

Nigel Gresley, the LNER's Chief Mechanical Officer, travelled on the Fliegende Hamburger diesel locomotive in Germany and was impressed by its streamlining, although he realized it was only efficient at high speeds. Gresley was certain that a modified A3 Pacific, with streamlining, could haul greater loads than other locomotives at the same speed or faster and a series of trials were conducted to confirm the A3's suitability.

With trials successfully completed, the LNER Board gave Gresley the go-ahead to create the "Silver Jubilee" streamlined trains, the first of the new streamlined A4s. The streamlining of the A4s' steam circuit, higher boiler pressure and extension of the firebox to create a combustion chamber made them more efficient than the A3 as they consumed less coal and water- especially later on when they were also fitted with a Kylchap double chimney. This improved their free steaming capabilities further.

The streamlined design not only improved speeds but it also created an updraught of smoke, obscuring the driver's vision, a major problem on the new Class A4 engines. The story goes that during wind-tunnel testing, after several unsuccessful efforts to get the smoke to lift clear, a thumbprint was inadvertently left on the clay model just behind the chimney. This succeeded in clearing the smoke and was incorporated into the final design.

No. 60016 ‘Silver King’ in its original form as No. 2511 was the third A4 Pacific to be constructed in 1935 and was also designed to haul the new streamlined ‘Silver Jubilee’ coaches. Each locomotive was withdrawn from service between 1952 and 1961, with none surviving into a preservation status.

Tech Specs:
Item Length - Without Packaging (cm): 23
Item Height - Without Packaging (cm): 5
Item Width - Without Packaging (cm): 3.5
Item Weight - Without Packaging: 0.3
Item Scale: 1:76 Scale 00 Gauge
Finish: Painted
Colour: Multiple
Gauge: OO
Operator: Midland Railway
Designer: Henry Fowler
Wheel Configuration: 4-4-0
Livery: Midland Railway
Minimum Curve (mm): Radius 2
Motor: 3 Pole
Number of Parts: 3
Class: Fowler 4P Class
Buffer Type: Separate Plastic Buffers
Coupling Type: Wide Tension Lock
Hornby Decoder Compatibility Primary: HM7000-8TXS: Bluetooth® & DCC Sound Decoder (8-pin)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0036/2115/8947/files/hornby-r30377-oo-scale-mr-4p-compound-train-pack-1167685149.jpg?v=1750586896
hornby-r30381-oo-scale-railroad-bagnall-0-4-0dh-diesel-loco-3-florence
Hornby R30381 OO Scale Railroad Bagnall 0-4-0DH Diesel Loco 3 Florence

This is the Hornby R30381 OO Scale Railroad Bagnall 0-4-0DH Diesel Loco 3 Florence

Enjoy this unique ‘Florence’ locomotive trundling around the tracks on your layout. In June 2003 EWS lost the Royal Mail mail train contract, with services diminishing to complete cessation in March 2004. Class 67s are also used as Thunderbird rescue locomotives for failed trains on the East Coast Main Line, on some freight trains and for use on chartered tourist trains. Two locomotives were assigned to, and received special liveries for, use with the Royal Train from 2003, and a third had a commemorative jubilee livery applied for use with the Royal Train during the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II in 2012.

No. 67020 entered service in 2000 with a standard EWS red and yellow livery.
