Model Railway

Model railway is a hobby fit for people of all ages. It’s accessible, adaptable, engaging and informative as you can have fun as you learn more and build new skills involving the mechanics, layouts, history and geography behind it.

At Hobbytech Toys, we have a selection of trains in HO/OO & N Scale train sets with all the basics included, tracks, DCC (Digital Command Control) system equipment, model train scenery and accessories for you to try out and advance your hobby. Hours of fun are guaranteed regardless whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned enthusiast.

What is the best model train scale for beginners?

It’s the HO (1:87) scale. It’s considered ideal for beginners because it offers the perfect balance between great detail and space. It’s also available in an array of models, offers ease of use and manageable size much like the OO scale. However, if space is an issue in your home, you might consider the N (1:160) scale.

Do model trains need oil?

As the replicas of real-world trains, they do need regular oiling. It’s an essential step of the maintenance process, and ensures the longevity of the trains, specifically of the moving parts, given that it reduces the wear and tear.

How often should I lubricate my model train?

Any time you notice there’s any friction or squeaky noise. If you regularly use the train, apply the specialised lubricant after several hours of use. For casual running, oil it each time you use the train. Remember to always clean out the old lubricant first with a clean, lint-free cloth before applying the new coat.

Learn More About Our Model Railway Range

  1. HO/OO Scale Trains: HO (1:87 scale) and OO (1:76 scale) are two of the most popular scales for model trains. While they have slightly different scales, they are often used interchangeably because they are very close in size. HO/OO scale trains are widely available and offer a good balance between detail and space requirements, making them popular among hobbyists.
  2. N Scale Trains: N scale trains are smaller than HO/OO scale, with a ratio of 1:160. This scale allows for more intricate layouts in limited space, making it popular among model railroaders with space constraints. Despite their smaller size, N scale trains can still feature impressive detail and realism.
  3. OO-9 Scale Trains: OO-9 scale is a narrow-gauge version of OO scale, representing narrow-gauge railways in a scale of 1:76. This scale is commonly used for modeling prototype narrow-gauge railways, offering unique modeling opportunities and challenges.
  4. TT Scale Trains: TT scale falls between HO and N scale, with a ratio of 1:120. TT scale trains are larger than N scale but smaller than HO/OO scale, offering a compromise between detail and space requirements. While less common than other scales, TT scale has a dedicated following among model railroaders.
  5. DCC Equipment: Digital Command Control (DCC) is a system for controlling model trains digitally, allowing for multiple trains to be controlled independently on the same track. DCC equipment includes command stations, decoders, throttles, and accessories, offering advanced features like sound, lighting effects, and realistic operation.
  6. Model Train Scenery: Model train scenery encompasses a wide range of accessories and materials used to create realistic landscapes and environments for model train layouts. This includes terrain features like hills, valleys, rivers, and mountains, as well as buildings, trees, figures, vehicles, and other details that bring layouts to life.
  7. Train Sets: Train sets are complete packages that include everything needed to get started with model trains, including trains, track, power supplies, and basic accessories. Train sets are often designed for beginners or as starter kits for model train enthusiasts, offering an easy and affordable way to start building and operating model train layouts.
